light of day
A selection of project we're currently allowed to share.
THE TASK
Capture Tokyo through the ever-changing qualities of natural light over a continuous 24-hour period.
In an era where almost every image can be generated, Light Of Day / Tokyo set out to prove that some stories still belong to reality.
The challenge wasn't to create a perfect image, but to patiently wait for the unrepeatable moments only natural light can offer. The objective was to create a series where time becomes ambiguous—blurring the boundaries between day and night while revealing Tokyo through authentic, unaltered moments.
THE OUTPUT
A photographic series that transforms ordinary urban moments into cinematic compositions.
Light Of Day / Tokyo expands the ongoing project into one of the world's most visually dynamic cities, creating a body of work where changing light becomes the storyteller and every frame invites a different interpretation of time.
THE IMPLEMENTATION
No artificial lighting. No CGI. No AI generation.
Photographer Jaap Vliegenthart documented a single location throughout an entire day, relying exclusively on available natural light.
By patiently observing the city's rhythm and returning to the same scenes as the light evolved, each image became part of a larger visual narrative that explores coincidence, contrast and the emotional perception of time.
